Welcome to the home of On-line Trails and Quizzes

Your Username and Password

You must set up a single username and password which will be used for all trails and quizzes. This information is held on the server, which means that you can save your answers on one device and then continue on another device. The username must only contain alphanumeric characters (i.e. no spaces or special characters) and is not case sensitive. You can optionally specify a display name which will be used on the leader board etc.

Important Note: Due to the low level of security provided, your password should not be one used anywhere else (bank accounts etc). To help enforce this, the password must only contain alphabetic characters (i.e. no numbers, spaces or special characters), but is case sensitive.

Different Types

There are 3 different types of online puzzle:

  • Google Maps Trails are treasure trails where you must navigate round a location using Google Maps in Street View.
  • Sequential Trails are treasure trails where you must answer each question before the next question is displayed. You may need to make use of the internet (and possibly Google Maps) to answer the questions, but they will not rely on Street View which is subject to frequent changes.
  • Online Quizzes are just a set of non-sequential questions which must be answered.

Different Modes

Google Maps Trails and Online Quizzes will be running in one of two "modes". When a new one becomes available, it will initially be in Competitive Mode, and after a while it will be changed to Casual Mode.

  • In Competitive Mode a leaderboard of players scores will be maintained, and there will be no option of checking your answers before they are submitted. Once your answers are submitted, your score will be displayed on the leader board, and you will be able to see all the correct answers, together with some helpful explanations.
  • Casual Mode is intended for the less competitive individuals. In this mode, you can check your progress to see whether your current answers are correct as you go along. When you've got as many correct as you can, there is an option to display all the correct answers, together with some helpful explanations. This mode does not update the leaderboard.

Sequential Trails do not have different modes. When completed your score will be added to the leader board.

Your Answers

Your answers will be saved every time you use any of the buttons which are specific to each quiz or trail. You should ensure that any answers you have typed in are saved (by pressing a button) before leaving the web page or switching to a different device.

Marking of your answers is automated, so the following points should be borne in mind when submitting an answer.

  • The system tries to be flexible when checking your answers and accept valid variations. For example if the answer to "What type of shop ...." was "Hairdressing Salon" any answer with the string "hair" in it would be accepted.
  • If the answer in a trail is a specific building then the building name (or house number and street name) would be sufficient.
  • Answers do not need to be case-sensitive.
  • Usually, answers will be no more than 3 or 4 words. There is no point adding explanations as they will be meaningless to the automated system.
  • Words must be spelt correctly, and for anagram solutions your answer should have the same number of letters as the anagram you're solving.
